Braintree Athletic Systems

Looking at 1st and 10 a little differently.

This paper looks at how the Coach's Video Assistant,a product of Braintree Athletic Systems could be used to analyze the first down play calling of your next opponent or even your own offensive team.

Create a new film study and choose the games that you want to include in your analysis. In our example we are analyzing an opponent of ours that we have filmed twice over the last two years.

We have 96 offensive clips. After we clicked once on the 1st down button below we saw the number 96 change to 30. As you can see, this means that 30 of the 96 clips are 1st down plays.

After applying the shortcut "Down and Distance" we can see that offensive play choices are close to 50-50 run-pass selection on first down. (Click here to see the report.)

We would now like to see what kind of plays are called when the first down is NOT the first play of a series. This happens of course during a drive when a team earns a first down. Coach's Video Assistant numbers each play series. CVA will also number each play of a drive. To find all the 1st Downs that are not the first play of a series put a check mark besides Play Number (Greater than ...) and enter the number 1.

You can see from the screen shot above that the number of 1st Down plays was reduced from 30 clips to 13. Although this number is not as large as we would like, it is above 10. Our confidence increases when the number of clips rises above 10.

Now when we apply the "Down and Distance" shortcut we can see the play calling has changed dramatically, and that the opponent favors the pass much more than the run, almost 70 percent of the time. When re-thinking our analysis and looking at 1st Downs differently we can also find that the opponent really runs the ball much more on the first play of a series than we thought. In this case the percentage swings from 50% to almost 60% when the "other" group of 1st Down plays are removed. (Click here to see the report).

This will help us a lot when planning defensively for this opponent.

What other kind of analsysis would you like us to include in our next newsletter. eMail Coach Rarick at jrarick@btathletics.com and send him your idea. If we can, we'll try to include it next month.
