General Idea
Making highlight films for individual players has always taken the coach and player a very long time. Many times the player was asked to do the "grunt" work of marking or choosing clips, but the coach was still in close proximity. We have even heard stories of coaches who invited players to their homes to use one of several different workstations. The players picked their clips, but the coach was still supervising. There are many other ways of doing it as well, but all of them require some "coach time". Whether the coach is doing the work or watching his players do the work, the coach is tied up in some manner or another. After making player highlight videos for eight years we finally devised a method that almost eliminates the coach in this long process. The procedure has three phases.
Phase 1: Create a Highlight Video Master. (Coach)
These videos are complete game films with one exception. A black screen with white lettering will appear before each clip. Each separate black clip will contain the number of the next clip in large, white lettering. The process of making this Highlight Video Master takes the coach about five minutes. When finished, the coach either needs to make a VHS tape or a DVD copy of the Highlight Video Master. We like to make DVD's of our master - but other coaches have successfully used VHS tape.
Phase 2: Use a Video Clip Sheet with each game film. (Player)
Video Clip Sheets can be found on our web site. The link has been added below. Players need one sheet for each game film. We will give them a folder with the DVD Highlight Video Masters and a set of 10-15 Video Clip Sheets. On their own time, in their own home, and most importantly, not around you, each player will watch the game film videos created in Phase I. Players mark the "highlight" clips on their Video Clip Sheets. We like our players to use a highlighter pen as it shows up better than just circling a number with a pencil. This usually takes a pretty good player about one hour per film. Many of them need some "coaching", however. I've had to tell more than one of my players that simply getting into a good stance was probably not the justification needed to make it a highlight clip.
Phase 3: Make the Highlight (Coach)
There is usually at least one weekend between a player receiving a "highlight packet" and its return to me. I'll sit the Video Clip Sheets down beside my computer and go to work. After naming the highlight and choosing the game films I begin to pick the clips needed. I am able to display on my computer screen an image that mirrors a Video Clip Sheet. Using the mouse I quickly click on each of the clips that the player selected. After finishing one game film I will choose another. When finished completely I will click on the CREATE Highlight button and send the video directly to VHS tape or to iMovie where my next step would be to make a DVD.
