Coach Fulk's top ten characteristics of a good film study.
10 Keep it short. Film studies of less
than fifteen clips are usually the most
effective. 9 Make the topic of your film study very
specific. 8 Always include an opening screen with
textual information describing the film
study. 7 Show every running play at least three
times. Having the middle clip of the three clip segment play
in slow motion is very effective. 6 Show each pass play
twice. 5 Slow motion is NOT very effective when
showing a pass play. 4 Include notes written by the coach.
Notes that are added as text to the screen or in paper form
increase the effectiveness of every film
study. 3 Actively involve the player. Film
studies that ask questions or require written feedback are
extremely effective. Coaches can set up charts that ask
players to record information from the film study. Players
can diagram a set of plays or respond to questions asked by
a position coach. 2 Know the best media for your players.
(Some can only watch VHS while others would prefer
DVD) and .... drum roll
please! 1 Give each player the assignment of
sharing a summary of the film study. Just as it is true in
the classroom, letting players talk about their learning,
about what they know or don't know is critically
important.
